Ludvig van Beethoven: Septet E flat major Op. 20
Karol Szymanowski: String Quartet No. 2 op. 56

Vaasa City Orchestra’s chamber music groups give their best in two very different pieces. The serenade-like and light Septet was Beethoven “Valse Triste”. The premiere of the work was already a huge success and the work remained as the most popular work by Beethoven during his lifetime. This gave him gray hair because he was afraid that it would shift the spotlight away too much from his other work. Fortunately for Beethoven, also his other works have gotten a moderate amount of performances.

Karol Szymanowskis String Quartet No. 2 came into existence just before the Polish composer’s mental breakdown. The work draws inspiration from both late impressionism and folk music melodies gathered from the Tatra Mountains in the spirit of Bartók. The resulting piece is an interesting mixture of hazy harmonies and rhythmic vigor.

Bel Canto

Thu 4th October at 7 p.m. Vaasa City Hall
Fri 5th October at 7 p.m. Snellman Hall, Kokkola
Vaasa City Orchestra and Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra
cond. James Lowe
sol. Johanna Rusanen-Kartano, soprano
Gioachino Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville): Overture

Johanna Rusanen-Kartano belongs to the opera nobility. Rusanen-Kartano, Chief Conductor James Lowe, Vaasa City Orchestra and one of the best chamber orchestras in the country, Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra play Italian opera arias. More thrilling could not the setting for the concert be. The imposing tone of a bigger orchestra gives justice to Brahms first symphony. It took 21 years for the composer to refine it to perfection.

Tickets: 35 / 30 / 25 €

Segerstam – The Human Wonder

Wed 30th October at 7 p.m. Seinäjoki Hall
Thu 1st November at 7 p.m. Vaasa City Hall
cond. Leif Segerstam
sol. Pia Segerstam, cello
Leif Segerstam: Symphony nro 319 “Human Wonder”
Benjamin Britten: Symphony for cello and orchestra op. 68
Johannes Brahms: Symphony nro 4 e minor op. 98

The conductor and composer Segerstam has produced a massive musical lifework that by latest estimates consists of at least 319 symphonies. Segerstam has dedicated his symphonies to famous people as well as hospital equipment. His latest symphony “Human wonder” is dedicated to President Sauli Niinistö’s and First Lady Jenni Haukio’s son, Aaro. This is the premiere of this symphony.

Britten’s symphony for cello and orchestra, which is composed for his cello muse Mstislav Rostropovitš, breaks the structural boundaries between a concerto and a symphony. The original work is a treasure hunt adventure for the ears and the heart. The guide on the adventure is the astounding cellist Pia Segerstam. One of the most magnificent tours de force of the German symphony tradition, Brahms’s monumental fourth symphony goes deep into the weeds to finish off the great program.

Flute's Charm

Wed 28.11. at 7 P.M. Vaasa City Hall
Thu 29.11. at 7 P.M. Schauman Hall, Pietarsaari
Fri 30.11. at 7 P.M. Kristiina Hall, Kristiinankaupunki

cond. James Lowe
sol. Erica Nygård, flute
Felix Mendelssohn: Hebrides Overture Op.26
Carl Reinecke: Ballade for Flute and Orchestra Op. 288
Edvard Grieg: Two Lyric Pieces Op. 68, No. 4 and 5
Francis Poulenc: Flute Sonata (arr. Lennox Berkeley)
Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 2 B flat major D. 125

The Principal Flute for Vaasa City Orchestra, Erica Nygård gives concerts frequently as a chamber musician and a soloist and has performed in her home country as well as Scandinavia, Estonia, Germany and the Netherlands. This time she conjures beautiful and calmingly soft atmospheres amongst rare orchestral gems as a soloist for the Vaasa City Orchestra.

The concert opens with Felix Mendelssohn’s impressive Hebrides Overture that was inspired by the composer’s trip to Scotland. The next piece is Reinecke’s touchingly beautiful Ballade for Flute and Orchestra which was his last completed work before his death.

Edvard Gried composed in total 66 Lyric Pieces for the piano, of which a few have been arranged for orchestra. These two fine pieces are arranged by the Norwegian master composer himself. Francis Poulenc was part of the ‘Les Six’, group of six French composers. His Flute Sonata is guaranteed French impressionism with a hint of Stravinsky. The concert ends with Schubert’s melodic second symphony.
