What is decided in the parliamentary elections?

According to the Finnish Constitution, sovereign power in Finland belongs to the people, represented by Parliament convened in session. There are 200 representatives in the Parliament.

MPs are elected every four years in direct, proportional and secret elections.

Parliament enacts all laws in Finland and decides on the state budget. Parliament also chooses the Prime Minister and oversees the government’s activities. In addition, the parliament approves the most important international agreements that bind Finland and affect matters related to the European Union.

Each eligible voter may, at their own discretion, vote in advance or on the day of the election.

An eligible voter is entitled to vote in advance at any public advance polling station in Finland or abroad, but on election day only at the polling station indicated on the notification (polling card) they received.

A voter is obliged to present proof of their identity when voting at a polling station. An ID card with a photo is sufficient as proof at advance voting stations and no polling card is needed. Those who have voted are automatically recorded.
