City of Vaasa's department of environmental services took water samples from Mansikkasaari, Hietasaari and Top Camping beaches on 5.8. Water samples showed low quantities of viruses. As the virus quantity was so minimal, the risk of getting sick from the water is extremely low.

Virus samples from Mansikkasaari beach showed traces of noro- and adenoviruses. Hietasaari and Top Camping beaches had only traces of norovirus. It is suspected that the reason for viruses in the water is due to the sewage leak discovered in July.

─ Top Camping is located at the possible area of influence, which is why sampling area was broaden, says City of Vaasa’s health inspector Maarit Kantola.

The quantities of noro-and adenoviruses was again minimal, which is why the risk of getting sick from the water is quite low. The risk of getting sick decreases if swimmers do not dive nor get any water in the mouth. However, swimming is not recommended at the moment.

Noro- and adenovirus does not multiply in nature, nor is it spread by animals. Therefore, finding the traces of these viruses in the water indicates that they are due to human feces contamination.

Next water samples are taken on Monday 19.8. Norovirus causes stomachache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Adenovirus usually causes respiratory infections.
