Basic education
Basic education is free of charge. There are 13 Finnish language and 5 Swedish language basic schools where basic education is arranged in the city of Vaasa. Furthermore, there are a few private schools; Vaasan kristillinen koulu and Vaasan Rudolf Steiner-koulu as well as a state-run school, Vasa Övningsskola in the City.
Compulsory education of a child who lives permanently in Finland begins in the year they turn seven. Compulsory education ends when the student reaches the age of 18 or if they complete an upper secondary qualification (matriculation examination or vocational qualification) or an equivalent foreign education before that.
Adults may complete the basic education syllabus for example at Alma Adult Education Centre.

The school year 2023-2024 for Finnish-speaking and Swedish-speaking basic education will begin on Thursday, 10 August 2023 and end on Saturday, 1 June 2024.

The City of Vaasa arranges morning and afternoon activities for pupils in Grades 1 and 2 as well as for pupils in other grades who are eligible for special support.

Pupil welfare refers to the promotion and maintenance of matters related to a child’s good learning, good mental and physical health, and social wellbeing. Every child in preschool and basic education is entitled to pupil welfare.

Support for learning and schooling reinforces education, healthy growth and development, so that the basic education can be completed.

Special educational line means that one learning area is emphasized, eg. music or languages.
