Fortuna – Games from Cultural History to Contemporary Art
The exhibition Fortuna is exploring gaming culture, offering an overview ranging from the cultural history of games to contemporary art. It draws inspiration from the concept of homo ludens – the playful and game-playing human being.
The exhibition sheds light on the cultural-historical dimensions of well-known games such as chess, board games, and card games. On display are rare gaming-related objects and collections from the Vaasa Museums, including game tables dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. Art historical works are also featured, providing a deeper understanding of the periods they represent.
Contemporary artworks offer a critical perspective on social structures while creating interactive experiences that connect art and play.
Some of the participating artists are significant figures in the Finnish game and media art field: Harold Hejazi (b. 1989), Joonas Hyvönen (b.1990), Marita Liulia (b. 1957), Reija Meriläinen (b. 1987), and Maria Nordbäck (b. 1957).
The exhibition is curated by Noora Lehtovuori. The exhibition has received support from the Finnish Heritage Agency and Aktiastiftelsen i Vasa.
