Valsörarna Biological Station – 60 Years of Scientific Research in the Heart of the Kvarken World Heritage Site
The Valsörarna Biological Station has been active for six decades. The scientific society Ostrobothnia Australis purchased the station building from the Finnish Lifeboat Institution in 1964. The station was taken into research use in 1966, although bird research on Valsörarna dates back to the 1930s.
Since then, the station has been renovated and developed to provide researchers with accommodation and functional working facilities. Today, activities at Valsörarna include migratory bird monitoring, bird ringing, and research on bats and spiders.
The station operates within the Kvarken Archipelago World Heritage Site, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
