Provincial museum activity

The museum guides and supports local museum activities as well as the preservation of cultural heritage in Ostrobothnia, for example overseeing the use of grants from the Finnish Heritage Agency.

Regional Museum Activity

In the region of Ostrobothnia, the responsibility for museum tasks is managed by the Ostrobothnian Museum that is part of the museums of the city of Vaasa. The main tasks of the regional responsibility museum include guiding, developing, and supporting museum activities as well as the management and preservation of cultural heritage and cultural environments in Ostrobothnia according to the plan made with the Finnish Heritage Agency.

Ostrobothnia has over 100 museums, the majority of which are local and open-air museums maintained by volunteers, but there are also specialized museums and collections of cultural-historical significance among them. The regional museum researcher advises on local museum work in their area and promotes cooperation among the region’s museums. The regional responsibility museum maintains the Ostrobothnian Museum Portal and the portal’s Facebook page.

The regional museum researcher advises on matters such as collection management, cataloging, conservation, and maintenance, as well as the upkeep and renovation of museum buildings and areas, funding, and matters related to exhibitions and public outreach. The regional museum researcher also serves as an expert in projects related to the history of their operating area and participates as needed in official work related to cultural environments.

The regional museum researcher provides advice and opinions on grant applications from local museums to the Finnish Heritage Agency and monitors their use.

For more information about local museum activities, please contact the regional museum researcher.

Collaboration

The issues faced by small local museums are often similar in nature, which is why it’s important to foster collaboration among museums. The regional responsibility museum, in cooperation with other stakeholders, organises training sessions for museum associations, such as through regional museum days or training events. These training sessions may also be open to other interested parties.

Ostrobothnian Museum Portal

The Ostrobothnian Museum Portal, maintained by the Vaasa City Museums, contains essential information about museums in Ostrobothnia
