Regional art museum

The aim of the activity is to promote visual arts and provide advice in managing art collections, and support municipalities, cultural institutions, and private actors in matters related to art.

Regional art museum activity

A regional responsibility museum’s tasks include activating visual arts activities, documenting contemporary art and visual art phenomena, and providing various visual arts-related services in the Ostrobothnia region. The museum advises and provides expert assistance in art-related matters to municipalities, cultural institutions, communities, and individuals in Ostrobothnia.

Advice and expert assistance include tasks such as cataloging, inventorying, and caring for art collections. The museum also provides guidance on information retrieval and copyright issues. The museum does not provide services for identifying, authenticating, or valuing artworks; instead, individuals are encouraged to seek such information from reliable art and auction sources.

Advice related to conservation and collection management

The museum offers guidance on preventive conservation and collection management. This advice pertains to the collections of municipalities, parishes, and local heritage museums within the jurisdiction, as well as public artworks such as statues, memorials, sculptures, and murals. Museums do not provide conservation services. If necessary, conservators can provide contact details for private conservation services.

The museum organises training in collection management for cultural organisations in Ostrobothnia as required.

Public art, memorials, statues, and plaques

Responsibilities of the regional responsibility museum also include public art, such as memorials, statues, and plaques. The museums of the city of Vaasa have prepared a process description for the acquisition of public art by the museums of Vaasa. The aim is to establish common practices among the various units of the city for the implementation and maintenance of public art, as well as to serve as a guide for municipalities in Ostrobothnia regarding the acquisition and maintenance of public art.

Regional art archive

The museum also houses a regional art archive, established in the 1990s. The regional art archive contains information about artists from Ostrobothnia, art practitioners, art, or the art scene. The archiving focuses on documenting Ostrobothnian visual culture and visual folk culture, particularly capturing their unique characteristics compared to other regions.

In matters concerning the regional art archive, please contact the regional art curator at silvia.rinne@vaasa.fi.
