Vaasa Arts Night 13.8.: Finnish-Indian traditional music and meditation practice
Article categories: Seminarier, föreläsningar och möten
Let's delve into silence and Finnish-Indian traditional music.
Music and meditative silence have a long history at Vaasa Arts Night. The working group, which has been organizing free meditation events and extensive music events for over two decades, will once again bring a unique combination of Eastern wisdom traditions, Indian music and Finnish-Karelian runo singing to Vaasa Main Library this year.
On Thursday, August 13, 2026, the events at Vaasa Main Library will delve deeper into music and silence. The event will consist of four 50-minute performances, each of which includes an introduction to meditation, a 10-minute guided silence exercise and a musical performance.
The events will be held in the Essee Hall at 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM, 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
The organizer is known in Vaasa as a safe and regular operator, which has brought everything from moments of calm to Indian qawwali and bhanjan music performances and large-scale oriental dance productions to the Night of Arts over the years. The cultural value of the activity is also indicated by the fact that the city of Vaasa invited the working group to perform at the Tikanoja Art Home’s Eastern Spirituality exhibition in 2024.
All events have always been and still are completely free of charge to the public.
This year’s Night of Arts headliner will be Joensuu singer-songwriter and meditation practitioner Tiina Huttu. Her musical roots are in folk music (she studied with Kaustinen, among others), and her expression combines Finno-Ugric singing traditions such as Kalevala runo singing, Balkan melodies and Indian musical traditions that have come to life through meditation.
Tiina Huttu has performed in the most extraordinary places – from the Sortavala Song Festival and Udmurtia to the mountain villages of Italy, the crypt of the Cathedral and a swamp accompanied by cranes. Her latest performances are fresh from the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival.
“My own texts arise spontaneously in meditative moments. I study wisdom traditions and old poems, which I reinterpret. With songs I want to strengthen inner strength and create harmony in the world,” Tiina Huttu describes.
