Onkilahti Park to welcome an outdoor classroom along the nature trail

An accessible outdoor classroom for shared use is currently under construction alongside the Onkilahti nature trail. Once completed, it will serve as a shared learning space for a wide range of users, including school groups. During construction, most of the nature trail will remain open, although a short section is currently temporarily closed. Work on the outdoor classroom is expected to be finished by November.
An inclusive meeting place in a natural setting
Once completed, the outdoor classroom will be available for different groups to use on a drop-in basis. The space is ideally suited to outdoor and nature-based learning for learners of all ages, offering opportunities to observe local wildlife and plant species in their natural habitats. There are also several information boards nearby that provide insights into the local natural environment. The outdoor classroom can also be used for a variety of other purposes, including as a meeting space close to nature.
The outdoor classroom has been designed with accessibility and versatility in mind, allowing a wide range of groups to make use of the space. To support this, it is divided into two sections, allowing two smaller groups to use the space at the same time. Accessible pathways and seating areas will ensure that the space can be enjoyed by everyone.
A project rooted in nature
The outdoor classroom will be built with respect for the surrounding natural environment. A paved central area will provide a versatile space for a range of activities. There will also be wooden and stone seating areas.
Protecting the local natural environment is a key priority throughout the construction process. To minimise the impact on the area, both tree removal and ground disturbance will be kept to a minimum.
Outdoor classroom set for completion by year-end as part of the Onkilahti master plan
The outdoor classroom forms part of the wider Onkilahti master plan. Construction began in early September, following the end of the bird nesting season. The project began with initial groundworks and will continue with paving and the installation of site furnishings. Before opening to the public, the site will be landscaped with new planting and other finishing touches.
The outdoor classroom will be built along the nature trail completed last year, between its two accessible entrances. As there is no winter maintenance in the area, the space is best suited to use when the ground is free of snow.
Construction work will temporarily affect access to the nature trail
Due to ongoing construction work, part of the nature trail is currently closed. The closure is expected to last for approximately two weeks. During this time, access from the Laivapuisto and Paperisilta side is closed. However, the nature trail can still be reached via the pedestrian and cycle path on the Onkilahti side. As a result, the trail will not be passable, and visitors will need to return the way they came. However, parts of the nature trail will remain open and can be used as normal.
