The new outdoor classroom in Onkilahti offers a natural setting for learning and meetings
Published: 22.10.2026
An accessible outdoor classroom has opened in Onkilahti. It can be used for a range of purposes, including lessons for school groups or meetings. The outdoor classroom is located next to the nature trail completed last year, between the trail’s two entrances. Construction work was completed ahead of schedule in early October.
The outdoor classroom is freely available to groups, with no advance booking required. The space is ideally suited to outdoor and nature-based learning for learners of all ages, offering opportunities to observe local wildlife and plants in their natural habitats. There are also several information boards nearby that provide insights into the local natural environment.
The outdoor classroom can also be used for other purposes, including as a meeting space close to nature.
Space for large and small groups
The outdoor classroom can accommodate either two smaller groups or one larger group at a time. At the tables, there are 10 seats and space for 10 wheelchairs. The second seating area, which has no tables, can accommodate 30 adults – and even more children.

Accessible pathways and seating areas will ensure that the space can be enjoyed by everyone.
As there is no winter maintenance in the area, the outdoor classroom is best suited to use when the ground is free of snow.
Emphasis on nature and local character
The outdoor classroom has been constructed with respect for the surrounding natural environment. During construction, as few trees as possible were felled and disturbance to the ground was kept to a minimum.
Material choices emphasised durability and the use of local materials. City employees made the furniture from local larch trees. Over the years, the larch develops a beautiful patina.

Vaasa has been awarded the prestigious 2026 EU Green Leaf Award in recognition of its environmental efforts. The outdoor classroom also supports the city’s Green Leaf goals by providing a learning environment for children’s environmental education.
The outdoor classroom forms part of the wider Onkilahti master plan. Construction began in early September, following the end of the bird nesting season.
