Street lighting installation to be completed this autumn

Some of the streets renovated in Vaasa this summer are still waiting for the installation of street lighting. The installation work has been delayed following the bankruptcy of the contractor selected to deliver the framework agreement. Work will resume with new contractors as soon as possible.
As the evenings grow darker, people in Vaasa may have noticed that street lighting has not yet been installed on some of the streets renovated this summer. For example, streetlight columns are yet to be installed on some otherwise completed streets, including Lentäjänkatu, Kalliokatu, Radiotie, Haldininkatu, Postikatu and Naulakuja, as well as part of Yrittäjänkatu.
The first of the remaining streets will be completed towards the end of September, and all work is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
Installation work to begin as soon as possible
The remaining installation work has now been assigned to the contractors ranked second in the original tendering process.
– Finalising the new contracts and resuming the work have required a considerable amount of administrative work, which has taken longer than expected, says Harri Heino, Electrical Technician at the City of Vaasa.
The change of contractor has also had an impact on material deliveries.
– We were only able to finalise the new contracts and place orders for the street lighting materials after the summer holidays. As a result, the start of the installation work has been delayed even further, Heino adds.
The new contractors will begin work on the sites as soon as the materials have been delivered. If necessary, more detailed schedules for individual areas will be announced as the work progresses.
The City of Vaasa apologises for any inconvenience caused by the delays to the installation work and by some streets remaining without street lighting.
New lighting is better for the environment
The new street lighting will use LED technology. LED lights use significantly less energy than older lighting technologies, making them a more environmentally friendly option.
