Postikatu is Vaasa’s first 2-1 road – do you know how to use it?
Published: 13.10.2026
The reconstruction of Postikatu has now been completed, with the section between Kauppiaankatu and Yrittäjänkatu becoming Vaasa’s first 2-1 road with two advisory cycle lanes. The approximately one-kilometre long 2-1 road improves safety for pedestrians and cyclists and helps calm traffic in the area. The new street opened at the end of September.
The new 2-1 road (2 minus 1) features a single lane for motor vehicles in the centre, with wider-than-usual advisory cycle lanes, or shoulders, on both sides for pedestrians and cyclists. Motorists drive in the centre of the road and use the shoulders when meeting oncoming vehicles.
A 2-1 road is a relatively new type of road in Finland, with the country’s first 2-1 road introduced in 2018.
Well suited for narrow streets
The aim of the 2-1 road is to improve street safety. Local residents have called for a pedestrian and cycle path along the street, as well as measures to calm traffic in the area.
– Postikatu was too narrow to accommodate a separate pedestrian and cycle path. A 2-1 road is an effective solution in locations like this, where the aim is to improve conditions for walking and cycling but there is not enough space for a separate path. It is also quick to implement and a cost-effective option, says Samuli Huusko, Project Engineer.
Avoid through traffic
Postikatu is primarily intended for local residents, so through traffic, particularly heavy vehicles, is discouraged. The official route from Old Vaasa towards Höstvesi runs via Kråklundinkatu.
How to use a 2-1 road
Checklist for motorists:
- Drive in the centre lane, keeping as close as possible to its right-hand edge.
- If you encounter an oncoming vehicle, move onto the right-hand shoulder to allow it to pass. If pedestrians or cyclists are using the shoulder, wait until it is safe to pass.
- Parking on the shoulder is not permitted, but you may stop if necessary.
- Avoid through traffic.
Checklist for cyclists:
- Use the shoulder on the right-hand side of the road in your direction of travel.
- If necessary, move into the centre lane to pass pedestrians. However, be prepared to give way to motor vehicles.
Checklist for pedestrians:
- You may use either shoulder.
- Keep close to the edge of the shoulder to leave plenty of space for other road users.
Other improvements on Postikatu
Postikatu underwent a full reconstruction over the summer, during which the ground structures and street lighting were completely renewed. The street is now complete, with the exception of the street lighting. The new street lighting will be installed later this autumn.
The speed limit on Postikatu is now 30 km/h. Postikatu has also been upgraded to the highest winter maintenance category, meaning snow clearance, gritting and other winter maintenance measures will give greater priority to pedestrians and cyclists.
