The journey of biowaste
Recycling food waste is easy when your building has a dedicated biowaste bin in the waste area. All you need at home is a container and a bin liner – preferably a paper bag. Choose a ventilated biowaste container, such as one with small holes in the sides, to keep the contents dry. Empty egg cartons soak up moisture, making them perfect for lining the bottom of the paper bag or the bin itself. Paper bags for biowaste can be picked up at a few places in Vaasa, or bought at the supermarket like any other household item. You can also use old newspapers to make a biowaste bag!
Think of collecting biowaste like this: if you throw wet wood on a fire, it slows down the burning and the heating. If you put biowaste in general waste, it reduces the efficiency of the burning. General waste is burned to generate energy, including for district heating. But properly sorted, biowaste becomes a valuable resource for producing biogas and compost. A single banana peel already makes a difference, while one kilogram of biowaste can generate the following:
- 100 hours of phone charging
- One minute in a hot shower
- 1.4 km trip in a biogas-powered car
Biowaste from Vaasa residents is managed by our local waste processing company, Stormossen. Find out more about sorting and processing biowaste and other waste on Stormossen’s website!
