The Peaks: premiere for artfilm by Valentina Gelain
Article categories: Museums & Folklore
At the Ostrobothnian Museum
At the end of the month, Valentina Gelain’s new video artwork will be presented at the Ostrobothnia Museum, in Vaasa. You are warmly invited to attend the event that inaugurates the artist’s most recent multidisciplinary project, in which the art film is the main production.
The artfilm ‘The Peaks’, through the landscapes of Ostrobothnia and their peculiar conformations, plunges us among surreal and dreamlike scenarios, where one can be absorbed and transported into the non-visible that constitutes us.
Locations such as Lostenen/Ilveskivi and the Pirunpesä/The Devil’s Nest are interpreted in an evocative narrative intended to manifest the inner mazes, the vastness to which we radically belong, and vice versa. A reality often ignored… embraced latencies that make us remain unknown not only to the ‘other’, but also to ourselves.
The project ‘The Peaks’ investigates psychic instances, the connection between them, and what can be achieved if we start paying more attention and do not suppress the unconscious, but rather, actively connect and try to overcome the passive and illusory state we perpetrate with our ‘conscious’ mind.
Event Program:
16:00 – welcome and greetings in the Ostrobothnia Museum’s main hall
16:15 – start of the screening in loop of the artfilm in the new auditorium (the length of the video is about 9 minutes)
17:25 – artist talk / Q&A session in the new auditorium
During the event, the main hall will serve as a meeting point, where people can enjoy drinks, snacks and chat with the artist, collaborators and other participants.

Valentina Gelain (Feltre, 1992) is a contemporary artist currently based in Ostrobothnia, Finland. She graduated in Visual Arts (BA-MA) from the Brera Academy of fine Arts in Milan, Italy.
Through subjective experience and introspection, Gelain investigates issues related to human existentialism, drawing directly from the mental and emotional, symbolic and dreamlike sphere. Stretching a thread between consciousness and unconsciousness, between vision and figuration, the balance oscillates through (self)analysis, awareness and the search for an empathic balance; recalling untethered resources of though and understanding of the others starting from ourselves. Thanks to this plural opening of perceptions, various research themes are touched upon, such as inner conflicts, mental landscapes and redemption, through a synergy of form and content, image and intention. Interdisciplinary artist, Gelain explores subjects and figurations through different languages and means of communication, which can help to best express her work vision.
