A new daycare unit in Palosaari is set to be completed in 2026
Published: 8.5.2025
The former Palosaari School building in Palosaari will be renovated to house a new bilingual daycare unit. Work began in April, and the building is expected to be ready for use by August 2026.
The new early childhood education and care (ECEC) unit in Palosaari will have space for seven groups, with a total of 130 places. The new bilingual unit is designed for children aged 0 to 6.
The interior will be renovated to provide each child group with its own space, respecting the old building while maximising functionality.
The group rooms for younger children will be located on the ground floor, while the second floor will accommodate spaces for older children. The third floor will accommodate multi-purpose therapy rooms and office spaces.
The yard design will also take into account both the cultural environment and practical functionality. The playground including its trees will be preserved, and play areas for older children, along with sports courts, will be located on the north-western side of the plot.
Each group will have its own space
The old classrooms will be divided into separate group, play, and rest areas.
– The children will not be all together in one large space; instead, they are divided into smaller groups where they can feel safe and receive individual attention says Anna Buss, Director of Early Childhood Education and Care.
The size of the child groups and the number of staff are regulated by the Act on Early Childhood Education and Care. The maximum group size for older children is 21 children, and the maximum group size for younger children, under 3 years of age, is 12 children.
The old daycare building will be demolished
All groups from the current Palosaari daycare, as well as Kaptensgatans daghem and Vikinga förskolan, will move into the new premises.
The current Palosaari daycare building, constructed in 1973, would require extensive and costly renovations in the near future. Therefore, a decision has been made to demolish it and relocate the ECEC unit to the former school building.
