A new STEAM class will start at Variska next autumn

Published: 22.1.2026

A new STEAM class will start at Variska Comprehensive School next autumn. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

In a STEAM class, students can learn future-focused skills alongside like-minded peers.

– In mathematics, students work on arithmetic, coding, and problem-solving. In physics and chemistry, the focus is on experimental work. In class, students carry out experiments such as making potato batteries, producing soap, and other exciting hands-on projects, say mathematics teachers Aino Norja and Juuso Norja.

STEAM pedagogy draws on technology, the sciences, and the arts to help students develop self-direction, communication skills, and critical thinking.

– We are establishing a STEAM class because to keep up with developments and to allow students to actively participate in Vaasa’s energy education pathway, explains Johanna Mäki-Torkko, Acting Principal of Variska Comprehensive School.

Collaboration with Vaasa-based technology companies

Students selected for the STEAM class will have the chance to broaden and deepen their skills through optional subjects.

The plans for the class include visits and collaboration with technology companies in Vaasa. At the same time, students will explore how science and technology appear in the workplace. Collaboration is also planned with the University of Vaasa’s LUMA Centre.

Incoming seventh-year students from the Variska school catchment area may apply for the STEAM class

The STEAM class welcomes students interested in the sciences who want to learn more together with a motivated group of peers.

Applications for the class are currently open. The application deadline is 12 February 2026. Year 6 students from Variska Comprehensive School, Nummi School and Huutoniemi School can apply for Variska Comprehensive School’s STEAM class.

More information about the application is available through Wilma or from the principals of Variska Comprehensive School:

  • Acting Principal Johanna Mäki-Torkko
  • Vice Principal Johanna Hännikäinen

The STEAM class will be introduced to Year 6 students at Nummi School, Huutoniemi School and Variska Comprehensive School in January 2026.

Vaasa is implementing an energy education pathway that stretches from early childhood education to higher education. In Vaasa, the Nordic Energy Capital, learners master the workplace skills and energy expertise needed for the future.

Year 6 students Mai Hannula, Noora Ekholm, Laura Ekholm and Dang Phuc from Variska Comprehensive School got to try out the STEAM class’s working methods, including experimental chemistry, under the guidance of teacher Aino Norja.
