Asphalting work has begun in Vaasa – with a focus on main roads and boulevards

Published: 17.6.2025

Street asphalting work began in Vaasa in week 23. More extensive road resurfacing work will begin during weeks 26–27. Resurfacing the roads improves overall traffic safety and, in certain cases, also helps enhance winter maintenance.

This summer, road resurfacing work managed by Public Utility Services will focus on main routes worn down by traffic, as well as boulevards in the city centre. For bicycle lanes, priority will be given to locations that do not require extensive groundwork.

This year, major asphalting work will take place on Vaasanpuistikko, Sepänkyläntie, Ruutikellarintie, Suvilahdentie and Gerbyn rantatie, among others.

Asphalting approach is carefully planned

Subject to budget availability, pavements will also be renewed on residential side streets in the poorest condition. However, the global situation and rising material costs are affecting both the methods and scope of the asphalting work.

– Although roughly the same amount of money will be spent on asphalting as in 2024, we need to carefully consider different methods to maximise the length of roads and bicycle lanes resurfaced within the street plan area, says Isak Norrgård, Maintenance Supervisor.

The City of Vaasa’s contractor for resurfacing and milling work is Peab Industri Oy. In addition to Public Utility Services, other organisations such as Vaasa Water, Vaasan Sähkö and companies responsible for telecommunications cable installation are also carrying out excavation and asphalting work on the streets. Public Utility Services issues permits to the operators and supervises the quality of their work. All work carried out is covered by a warranty, so the operators are obliged to fix any defects identified on site.

Traffic arrangements during asphalting work

Milling and resurfacing work will be carried out with the aim of minimising disruption to traffic. To ensure traffic and work safety, as well as smooth traffic flow, asphalting at challenging sites will be carried out at night.

Road users and local residents are kindly asked to be patient with the traffic and, if possible, to use alternative routes. In some cases, temporary relocation signs will be used during the asphalting work, so drivers should watch out for any temporary no-parking signs.
