Published: 5.12.2025
FCDC Corp Oy, a Finnish company specialising in the development of data centre projects, has submitted an application for a building permit for a new data centre. The permit concerns a plot at Kuriiritie 7, where a data centre complex of approximately 66,000 square metres of floor area is planned. The site is located in the GigaVaasa area, within the Laajametsä business district near the airport. If realised, the project is expected to have a significant employment impact.
The project is expected to provide a major boost to the Vaasa region’s economy and strengthen the city’s profile as a destination for long-term investments by international players.
– The data centre project supports Vaasa’s ambition to be a pioneer in sustainable energy and digital infrastructure. It will bring investment and jobs to the region, reinforcing its position as an internationally attractive and competitive technology hub, says Frans Villanen, Chair of Vaasa City Council.
The design and construction phase is estimated to generate more than one thousand person-years of employment, while the operation of the completed data centre and related services will create hundreds of new jobs. Data centres employ a wide range of professionals, including engineers, developers, IT specialists and logistics experts.
The plan includes two main data centre buildings housing server halls, office and logistics facilities, and storage areas. Smaller auxiliary buildings are also planned for technical support functions. From the outset, the project has considered solutions for utilising waste heat.
FCDC acts as the project developer, securing the necessary permits, developing infrastructure and managing negotiations leading to the selection of a data centre operator. The operator will construct and run the facility on a long-term basis.
– We are delighted that our data centre project has progressed to the building permit stage. Vaasa is an exceptionally attractive location for data centre operators: it offers a stable electricity network, a skilled workforce, reliable infrastructure and excellent transport connections. In addition, the business environment here is highly supportive, says Jaakko Leinonen, Director of Land Acquisition and Development at FCDC Corp Oy.
The building permit applicant is Kiinteistö Oy MegaWatti, a company owned by FCDC, which leases the plot from the City of Vaasa. The company was registered in the Trade Register on 1 December.
Construction is planned to start in 2026, with operations expected to begin between 2028 and 2029.
The City of Vaasa’s Building and Environment Committee will review the permit application at its meeting on 10 December 2025.
