Construction of a nature trail to begin in Onkilahti
Published: 6.8.2025
Construction of a new nature trail in the Onkilahti activity park is set to begin in August. The nature trail will be an accessible walkway made of steel grating, with rest areas, information boards and a bird box exhibition along the route.
The nature trail will be built in the wooded area east of Onkilahti activity park, near the cemetery and the Paperisilta bridge (also known as Putusilta).
Construction of the trail is scheduled to start in week 33 and is expected to be completed later this autumn.
A 220-metre-long accessible trail
The trail, approximately 220 metres long, will be an accessible walkway made of steel grating on a pressure-treated wooden base. This helps minimise strain on the natural environment by reducing the use of heavy machinery.
– The trail will feature rest areas with benches and information boards about the local nature. Visitors will also be able to spot wooden animal figures and a bird box exhibition along the trail, says Piia Vainio, Head Horticulturist.
The new accessible trail makes it easier for people to enjoy nature close to home.
A pleasantly cool and shady area
The trees along the trail provide coolness and shade in the otherwise open Onkilahti Park.
To increase biodiversity, deciduous trees will be planted on the sunny western edge of the nature trail area, and conifers will be added in the forested area to the east. Fallen trees and tall stumps, known as snags, will be left in place to support local biodiversity. The Siberian dogwood shrubs, classified as an invasive species, will be eradicated.
Various teams from Public Utility Services will carry out the main work, including clearing and construction. A contractor will be responsible for preparing the gravelled sections.
The nature trail project has received funding from the government’s ‘Get Finland Moving’ programme, which aims to promote physical activity for people of all ages.
