Construction of a new street has begun near Silveria

Published: 6.6.2025

The City of Vaasa’s Public Utility Services have started construction of a new street in Hietalahti, near Silveria restaurant. The new street, named Pelikatu, will improve safety and parking opportunities in the area.

The street plan for Pelikatu will improve parking around the nearby sports halls. It will also create a safer route along the Ruutikellarintie pedestrian and bicycle lane and to the area’s sports fields, as access will be via Pelikatu only, rather than through the Silveria and VPS junior hall car parks.

Work will begin with the construction of a preload embankment, carried out in two phases. A preload embankment is typically made of aggregate and is used to compress the ground and drain excess water from the soil before the actual street is built.

The first phase will take place in June, the second in August

In the first phase, the preload embankment will be built from the extension of Kurteninkatu, behind Silveria, to the corner of the VPS junior hall. The work will be carried out during June.

The first phase of construction will result in some increase in heavy traffic in front of restaurant Silveria and along Ruutikellarintie.

The second phase of the preload embankment will be constructed in August, from the VPS junior hall to Ruutikellarintie. This phase will also involve some excavation work. In August, construction traffic will be concentrated on the existing section of Pelikatu and along Ruutikellarintie.

Work at the construction site will be adjusted to accommodate the Wasa Football Cup, taking place from 4 to 6 July.

The actual street structure, including paving, is scheduled for construction in summer 2026.
