Pupils’ swimming skills have declined and absences on swimming days have increased
Vaasa is taking steps to strengthen swimming instruction in basic education to ensure that pupils’ swimming skills and water safety competencies improve more effectively.
“There is a clear need for this project due to the decline in pupils’ swimming skills. In addition, absences on swimming days have increased significantly over the years,” says coordinator and physical education teacher Sanna Laulaja from Variska Comprehensive School.
The project will examine, among other things, how many pupils in Vaasa lack basic swimming skills and will plan support measures to help these pupils improve. A teaching package on lifesaving skills will be developed, and training will be offered to teachers.
Vaasa receives funding from the Ministry of education and culture
The Ministry of Education and Culture (OKM) has launched significant initiatives to strengthen swimming and water safety skills in basic education. The goal is to ensure that every comprehensive school pupil achieves an adequate level of swimming proficiency, regardless of where they live.
In December 2025, the ministry granted a total of 3.5 million euros in state subsidies to municipalities and education providers. Vaasa received 14,100 euros in funding.
