Right-of-way rules have changed at several junctions in Vaasa – do you recognise the new traffic sign?
Published: 23.10.2025
The City of Vaasa is focusing on improving pedestrian and cycling safety, particularly along main cycling paths and school routes. This year, several raised pedestrian crossings have been changed to give cyclists right of way.
B7 traffic signs have been installed at the junctions to clarify right-of-way rules and require drivers to give way to cyclists crossing the road.
The new right-of-way rules have been introduced at several locations including Kuninkaantie, Ruutikellarintie, Välitie, Viertolantie and Laivakatu. They are part of the main cycling and school routes and are included in the enhanced winter maintenance programme. A similar arrangement has also been in place on Järvikatu since 2022.
Safer journeys to school
The new right-of-way rule enhances safety and clarifies traffic arrangements at busy junctions.
To further enhance traffic safety, street lighting and visibility have been upgraded at these locations. The lights now brighten as pedestrians or cyclists approach the crossing.
– The arrangements have worked well and they have enhanced safety. These locations are along school routes where many children and young people cycle, so safe crossing is particularly important, says Samuli Huusko, Project Engineer.
The City of Vaasa reminds everyone to stay alert on the roads.
