The junction of Koulukatu and Korsholmanpuistikko to be fitted with traffic lights

Published: 27.6.2025

Traffic lights will be installed at the junction of Koulukatu and Korsholmanpuistikko during 2025. The aim is to improve bus flow and enhance road safety.

Traffic lights are needed at the busy junction, where traffic volumes are expected to increase next year following the opening of a new daycare unit.

– Around 9,000 vehicles currently travel along Koulukatu each day, which is more than on most streets in the city centre. For example, around 1,000 fewer vehicles use Kauppapuistikko each day, even though it has twice the traffic capacity, says Jukka Talvi, Head of Public Utility Services.

Traffic signal priority will speed up bus journeys

The aim of the traffic lights is to improve the flow of public transport at the junction, which has been causing timetable delays. Buses have had significant difficulty turning left from Korsholmanpuistikko, especially during peak rush hour. This is usually the time when keeping to the timetable is most difficult anyway.

Buses will be given priority at the traffic lights at the junction. If a bus approaching the junction is running late, the automatic control system will detect this and either extend the green light duration or bring the green light forward. This will help buses pass through the junction smoothly.

Pedestrian crossings to be made safer

At the same time, the safety of pedestrian crossings will also be improved. Currently, when a bus stops at a pedestrian crossing, it obstructs visibility and prevents pedestrians and cyclists from crossing.

In the new arrangement, pedestrian crossings will be shortened by narrowing the roadway on Korsholmanpuistikko. The aim of the changes is to improve safety for journeys to and from schools and daycare units.

Construction to begin in August

Work on modifying the junction will begin in August and be completed later in the autumn. Temporary traffic arrangements will be required near the worksite, with further information provided as necessary. The city thanks residents and road users for their patience and cooperation during the construction.

The project is part of the city’s public transport development programme. The total cost is approximately €150,000, half of which will be spent on traffic light control and the other half on roadworks.
