The new accessible nature trail in Onkilahti is now open
Published: 10.12.2025
Onkilahti’s new nature trail is now completed and opens to the public on 10 December. The trail is located near Onkilahti Activity Park and provides easy access to the surrounding nature.
The nature trail is roughly 220 metres long and runs through the wooded area east of Onkilahti Activity Park, close to the cemetery and Paperisilta Bridge (Putusilta Bridge).
The trail is built from metal grating and has handrails on both sides, providing extra safety for users of all ages. Pets are welcome on the trail, but the metal grating can be tricky for small paws.
Respecting nature and the needs of all users
Construction of the nature trail began in August, and all work, except for the excavation, was carried out by the city’s own landscaping team. The work was done manually, which helped preserve the surrounding nature. For example, no machinery was brought onto the site, and the metal grating was installed on screw piles driven into the ground.
During construction, the trail was tested with the accessibility coordination team, and their observations were incorporated into the final design.
Finishing touches completed in early 2026
More benches as well as information signs about the local wildlife and plants will be installed along the trail in early 2026. The information signs will also include Braille.
The trail is not maintained in winter, but if the weather stays mild, residents will be able to explore the nature trail before the snow arrives.
