The Secret of the Castle Mound – Summer exhibition at the Museum of Old Vaasa features archaeological finds from the Korsholm ramparts

Published: 27.5.2025

This summer, the Museum of Old Vaasa will host an exhibition showcasing archaeological finds from excavations carried out at the Korsholm ramparts. The Secret of the Castle Mound cabinet exhibition will be on show during the museum’s opening hours from 4 June to 30 August 2025.

The exhibition features around thirty selected artefacts uncovered during archaeological excavations carried out between 2022 and 2024. The artefacts on display in the cases date from the Middle Ages to the late 18th century. In addition, The Secret of the Castle Mound exhibition includes photographs of other finds that are not physically on display.

The excavations of the medieval Korsholm fortress and royal estate have been led by archaeologist, PhD Jan Fast, with local school groups and amateur archaeologists from Vaasa actively participating over the past three years. The project is one of the most significant archaeological undertakings in recent years on the site of a medieval castle in Finland and it has resulted in the discovery of thousands of artefacts.

The exhibition is organised in collaboration between the Federation of Swedish Municipalities in Ostrobothnia for Education and Culture/KulturÖsterbotten and Alma Adult Education Centre in Vaasa. Excavations at the Korsholm ramparts will continue again this summer (20 July – 1 August 2025).
