Wasa Sinfonietta was recognised as the 2024 Vaasa Cultural Achievement of the Year

This year, we received proposals from 68 residents, highlighting a total of 49 cultural contributors from Vaasa. A panel convened by Cultural Services selected three nominees for the public vote, allowing residents to choose their favourite. Wasa Sinfonietta received the most votes.

Wasa Sinfonietta, which celebrated its 95th anniversary in 2024, is an amateur orchestra with around 60 members, including musicians from students to seniors. The orchestra actively collaborates with other cultural organisations in Vaasa and performs in a variety of settings, including care homes.

The 2024 programme, themed ‘Music is for Everyone’, featured numerous concerts and community projects. Wasa Sinfonietta performed at several events, including a concert in support of Ukraine at Vaasa Church, in care homes, at the Strömsö Open House event, and as the practice orchestra for conducting courses. In the autumn, the orchestra attracted large audiences with concerts centred on the themes of Bond films, performed in collaboration with the Kurikan Soittokunta brass and reed band. The year culminated in the ‘Oi Saavu Rauhan Juhla’ (‘Oh, Come, Celebration of Peace’) joint concert with Sekakuoro Sirpaleet mixed choir and the University of Vaasa Choir.

Over 3,000 music lovers attended Wasa Sinfonietta’s concerts, and the orchestra engaged tens of thousands of people on social media throughout the year. The orchestra features players of all ages from eight different countries.

The Vaasa Cultural Achievement of the Year Award amounts to €2,000 and was presented for the sixth time this year.
