What are your views on the gritting of walking and cycling paths? Complete the survey!

Published: 11.2.2026

The City of Vaasa is asking residents how satisfied they are with the gritting materials used to prevent slips and falls on walking and cycling routes. By taking part in the survey, residents can influence which gritting materials will be used in Vaasa in the future.

The City of Vaasa currently uses two different materials for gritting: sand on enhanced winter maintenance routes, and 8 mm gravel on the city’s other walking and cycling paths. The survey does not cover gritting on pavements, as this is the responsibility of property owners.

The City now wants to hear residents’ experiences with the different gritting materials. The survey will also look at how the materials affect punctures in bicycle tyres.

The survey is open until 28 February 2026 and only takes a couple of minutes to complete. Click here to take the survey (webropol.com)

– We hope to receive responses from a wide range of user groups. In Vaasa, sand has now been used for the second winter on the enhanced winter maintenance routes, with good results. The city has received positive feedback from walkers and cyclists. We will produce a summary of the materials used based on the survey results, says Samuli Huusko, Project Engineer.

You can also complete the survey at Citizen Services office located in Tammipiha (Teräksenkuja 1) and at the Vähäkyrö joint service point (Vähänkyröntie 11) during their opening hours.

Vaasa is a European Green Leaf City for 2026. The European Commission awards this recognition annually to cities that promote sustainable development and work actively to protect the environment and climate. Increasing cycling and walking is one the ways Vaasa aims to reduce CO2 emissions from transport.
