AARON HERMUNEN & HEIDI ANNIINA MATTILA: PAINTINGS
Both of their work incorporate abstraction, centrality of color and an interest in the qualitites of paint. The third joint exhibition by Aaron Hermunen and Heidi Anniina Mattila is built on working together, exposing one’s paintings to another’s touch, preferences, opinions and views. In addition to the artists’ own works the exhibition features a series of works painted in collaboration. Hermunen and Mattila ponder the different ways, boundaries and demarcations of painting. What follows when you paint on another’s painting?

Aaron Hermunen (b.1977) contemplates how far you can go stripping a landscape, where the line for abstract is drawn. Hermunen ponders the customary use of color in painting, especially in landscape painting.

Heidi Anniina Mattila (b. 1983) aims for pure abstraction when painting, even if the mind will always find something demonstrative or referencing natural phenomena in the paintings. Experimentation, the use of color and the translucency or opacity of paint are central in her works.
