Does a book always have a beginning and an end? Can a book be a moving image? How do the book and its images settle into the space?
Eleven artists ponder these questions in the exhibition “Sideways” The authors approach the photo book and its structure, each in its own way.
The book enables diverse styles of expression and narrative, material choices and techniques. The exhibition features finished and unfinished, handmade and self-printed books, book parts, sketches and blanks, as well as photographs and videos. There are books that can be browsed and touched, as well as books that are meant to be viewed only.
In the spring of 2022, the authors got acquainted in artist paula roush’s Page-Turner workshop, which examined the encounters between photographic art and the artist’s book.
