SM4, aka Söderbacka-Matikainen Quartet, featuring David Lyttle (IRL) and Mika Mylläri is a new exciting collaboration. The music by SM4 can be described as melodic jazz with modern flavours that sets a playground for the musicians to create rhythmic and harmonic adventures. The music for SM4 is mainly written by guitarist Martin Söderbacka and basist Eevalotta Matikainen. Together with drummer David Lyttle from Northern Ireland and one of Finlands foremost jazz musicians and trumpet players Mika Mylläri, they offer an evening filled with jazz, beautiful music and joyful moments.
David Lyttle (IRL) is one of Northern Irelands foremost jazz musicians. Lyttle has played in more than 25 different countries and has collaborated with musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dave Liebman, Seamus Blake, Joe Lovano, Jesse Van Ruller, Jonathan Kreisberg, Terell Stafford, Pino Palladino, Kenny Werner and Liane Carrol. He as also received nominations for MOBO Awards and Urban Music Awards. His work is described by Rolling Stone magazine as “one of the best, robust listening experiences you’re likely to have all year” and by website All about jazz as “…one of the world’s great contemporary drummers.”
Mika Mylläri is a Finnish jazzmusician, composer, conductor and producer.
He have worked 30 years as a professional musician around the world with a wide collection of projects, doing concerts, recordings, workshops and theater works. Mika has a master degree from the Sibelius Academy (Uniarts Helsinki). He has also lived and studied in New York, Paris, Copenhagen.
Mika’s own group MMQ (Mika Mylläri Quintet) was widely known as one of the best Finnish jazz ensembles in the 90s. The MMQ records Heritages (1992) and Les Ponts (1997) were both voted as jazzalbum of the year in Finland. Mika has played in several bands in Finland and abroad. He has worked since 1997 in the UK with great musicians and bands like Ed Jones quintet, Jonathan Gee, US3 to name a few. Mika Mylläri have composed music for all types of bands and styles, without boundaries. Classical singers, Chamber orchestras, Pop music, Jazz, big bands, Rock music, world music. In 2020 the band MMQ was renewed and released a fusion jazz record named ”MMQ”.
Martin Söderbacka and Eevalotta Matikainen started collaborating in 2011 and formed Söderbacka-Matikainen Duo. They have since then performed together with some of Finlands foremost musicians such as Sami Saari, Joonatan Rautio, Jukka Perko, Teemu Viinikainen, Osmo Ikonen, Jesse Kaikuranta, Mikko Pettinen, Manuel Dunkel, Olli Soikkeli, Mika Mylläri and Mikko Hassinen. Söderbacka and Matikainen co-produce concert series and events such as Puutarhajazz and ELive Jazz Happening in the city of Kokkola. Martin and Eevalotta also co-lead the energetic soul/jazz quintet ”Soul What? feat. Joonatan Rautio”.
