Published: 2.5.2024

Vaasa Choir Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary from 9 to 11 May 2024. The main performers feature the YL Male Voice Choir alongside the Estonian National Male Choir Eesti Rahvusmeeskoor, as well as the award-winning Tampere Cappella, Flok Vocals, and Kipinät Choir. Tickets for the main concerts are now on sale. In honour of the anniversary, community singing events will also be organised.

The main concerts will showcase a unique collaboration between two male choirs, as the YL Male Voice Choir meets the Estonian National Male Choir for the first time in Finland. The concert will take place at Vaasa Church on Saturday, 11 May 2024 at 17:00.

Experience fresh a cappella, captivating pop, and jazz at Ritz on Saturday, 11 May 2024 at 19:30. The concert will feature the acclaimed Kipinät Choir and FLOK Vocals.

Under the direction of Leiu Ryland-Jones, the chamber choir Tampere Cappella will celebrate the opening of the 30th Choir Festival at Vaasa City Hall on Thursday, 9 May 2024 at 17:00. The concert will feature a piece receiving its Finnish premiere. Local choir Pedavoces and the vocal ensemble Röster will also perform at the opening concert.

Grand Celebration at Vaasa Church

On Friday, 10 May 2024 at 19:00, we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Vaasa Choir Festival and the 50th anniversary of the Vaasa City Orchestra. The concert at Vaasa Church will feature the best choir and orchestra classics from national romantic, domestic, and foreign opera literature, as well as newer music.

Alongside local choirs, the Helsinki-based YL Male Voice Choir will seamlessly interpret a programme ranging from tango to Sibelius to opera. The concert will be conducted by the artistic director of the Vaasa Choir Festival, Kristian Heberg.

Free concerts, community singing, and evening programme

Seventy choirs from across Finland will participate in the festival. In addition, Swedish and Estonian choirs will be heard.

Alongside the main concerts, there will be dozens of free concerts throughout the city. Nearly 50 choirs will perform during the two-day non-stop event at Rewell shopping centre. Performances will also take place at the Vaasa Market Hall and Espen shopping centre. The festival will take a head start on Thursday afternoon at the Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art. Choirs will also perform at festival evening events, held this year at Villa Sandviken and Ernst Salonger.

In honour of the anniversary, community singing events will also be organised. For example, Korsholm Big Band will lead sing-alongs at the market square on Saturday, 10 May 2024, starting at 14:00. This year, there will be four main concerts with an entrance fee. Additionally, separate tickets will be sold for the festival evening events, which include meals.
