Associations and city units in Vaasa showed strong interest in the Eco Bonus

Published: 1.6.2026

A total of 36 applications were submitted in the second Eco Bonus call of the Green Leaf anniversary year. The supported ideas will become visible to residents throughout the year as various events and initiatives.

Associations and resident communities operating in Vaasa, as well as units of the City of Vaasa, were eligible to apply for Eco Bonus funding of €100–€1,000 for an event, a small-scale investment, or another initiative related to the themes of the Green Leaf year. The application period took place in April 2026.

In total, 36 Eco Bonus applications were received, of which 13 came from City of Vaasa units and the rest from local associations and resident communities. A working group reviewed the applications, which were also discussed by the City of Vaasa’s management team.

“We are very pleased to see that associations and city units have enthusiastically developed ideas suited to the Green Leaf year. The applications were carefully prepared, and it is wonderful that we are able to grant Eco Bonus funding to every applicant,” says Project Manager Eva Bligt-Lindén from the City of Vaasa.

In the previous call, held in November–December, 50 Eco Bonus applications were received, and funding was granted to 48 applicants.

A year of working together

A key objective of the Green Leaf year is to inspire residents of Vaasa to take both small and large actions for the environment. With Eco Bonus support, associations and city units can organise initiatives that promote biodiversity, the circular economy, or energy efficiency. Everyone can also make a difference by taking part — every action matters.

“By working together, we can strengthen our sense of community while making our city even more pleasant and greener. Eco Bonus is an excellent way to support these values,” Bligt-Lindén adds.

Eco Bonus initiatives will be visible to residents throughout the year in the form of events and activities, such as an ecological environmental art installation at Alkula farm, a clean-up campaign in Hietasaari, and guidance on energy-efficient driving.

Associations and city units will share information about their upcoming events in the Vaasa events calendar: https://www.vaasa.fi/en/events/.

Vaasa has been named a European Green Leaf City for 2026. The European Commission awards this recognition annually to cities that promote sustainable development and work systematically for the environment and climate.
