New mountain biking park in Suvilahti set for completion in September

The Suvilahti bike park will feature four downhill trails and a dedicated uphill route. The service road leading to the top of the hill will also serve as a second uphill route.

Unlike traditional mountain bike trails, these routes have smooth surfaces, making them suitable for BMX bikes and regular bicycles as well. The bike park is free to use and open to everyone.

– The easiest trails are suitable for anyone with basic cycling skills, while the more demanding trails provide a challenge for experienced riders. The new bike park has also been designed with children and young people in mind, helping them build their cycling skills, says Mika Lehtonen, Director of Sports.

The trails are being built by Trail It Oy in collaboration with local cycling enthusiasts, who have been involved in the design process.

The bike park will officially open on 3 October

The official opening of the Suvilahti bike park will take place on Saturday 3 October from 10 to 13. The programme will include riding demonstrations and information about the activities of Vaasa Trail Riders ry.

The first 200 visitors will be treated to coffee, juice, and sweet buns.

Suvilahti Summit to take shape over the coming years

The former Suvilahti landfill was in operation from 1966 to 2000. Plans for the site’s future use were developed between 2020 and 2025, with local residents actively involved in the process.

The new recreational and outdoor area, known as Suvilahti Summit (Suvilahden huippu), is also set to feature a fitness trail, viewing platforms and outdoor fitness stairs. The area will also feature information boards highlighting its history and natural surroundings.

The remaining plans are awaiting the completion of the landfill closure structures and the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities. The aim is to complete the structures by the end of 2026, allowing work on developing the area for other recreational uses to begin in 2027.
