Now is the time to apply for the early childhood education and care places for the autumn term
Published: 5.3.2026
If your child is not already secured with an early childhood education and care place for the autumn term but you know that one becomes necessary due to the parents or guardians work or studies by then, apply for it now – by the end of March 2026! It is also advisable to apply now for a transfer to another early childhood education and care place.
In this way, early childhood education and care is better equipped to plan activities and allocate places as well as possible to meet families’ wishes.
Apply for an early childhood education place for your child
You can apply for a place in early childhood education and care around the year, according to the needs of the family. While this option exists, we still hope that the applications for the autumn term would be sent by March 31st, 2026, in case you already know that you will need to apply anyway.
– By sending us the applications in time, you make it possible for us to plan and coordinate all the activities and to adjust the composition of the groups well. This ensures more robust everyday life in our daycare centres, describes service manager Maria Karvonen.
Naming more than one place in the application
As for the children starting their early childhood education and care in August and early September, their families will be informed already in May–June about their children’s daycare centre.
Other applications follow the normal procedure of being handled at the latest a month before the need for early childhood education and care starts. As for the autumn term, then, we will inform the families a bit faster than normal.
Karvonen advises the parents to make use of the option of naming more than one daycare centre that would suit them.- The application allows naming up to four options, and it is advisable to make full use of this feature. Certain neighbourhoods, such as the city centre, have a higher demand for daycare places and thus it is more difficult to get one. Therefore, it is always beneficial to name your options.
Two new daycare centres to open in the autumn
Two new daycare centres will open in Vaasa this autumn.
A new Swedish-language daycare centre, Gustavsborgs daghem, with eight groups, will be established in the barracks area. Operations will begin in the new facilities on August 1st. At the same time, activities at the current Gustavsborgs daghem and Rådhusgatans daghem will cease.
In Palosaari, a new bilingual daycare centre will be renovated in the premises of the former Palosaari school. The new Palosaari daycare centre will open at the end of 2026. The bilingual daycare centre will have facilities for seven child groups.
In addition, starting August 1st, families can also apply for places for children under the age of three at Hemstrands daghem.
