Postikatu renovation begins – most of the street to close on 18 May

Published: 7.5.2026

The City of Vaasa will begin extensive renovation work on Postikatu between Yrittäjänkatu and Kauppiaankatu on Monday 18 May. The work is expected to continue until September. Initially, the street will be closed to traffic between Yrittäjänkatu and Itäinen Aitakatu.

The work will start at the junction of Postikatu and Yrittäjänkatu. In the first phase, Postikatu will be completely closed to traffic between Yrittäjänkatu and Itäinen Aitakatu for approximately a month. The closure is necessary due to the challenging location of the worksite, the need to ensure safety, and to allow the work to proceed smoothly. Traffic will be diverted via Runsorintie.

Once the first section is complete apart from surfacing, work will continue from the junction of Postikatu and Itäinen Aitakatu towards Kauppiaankatu. At this point, the street will be closed in stages and in smaller sections.

Access to Mustasaari Church will be maintained throughout the works. Initially, access to Mustasaari Church will be from the direction of Kauppiaankatu. As the work progresses past Adelcranzinkuja, access will also be possible from the direction of Yrittäjänkatu.

Local stakeholders will be informed separately about diversion routes at different phases of the works.

The street will be completely rebuilt

As part of the overhaul, Postikatu – currently in very poor condition – will be structurally renewed, and the street lighting replaced. In practice, this means the street will be completely rebuilt. The aim is to improve safety on the street and make getting around smoother.

Each year, the City of Vaasa renovates streets in badly need of repair, and this time it is Postikatu’s turn.
