Sign up for a free guided driving session and discover how much fuel you could save
Published: 17.9.2026
During Energy Saving Week, Vaasa residents can see for themselves how simple changes to their driving habits can cut fuel consumption, save money, and reduce their environmental impact. Free eco-driving guidance will be available on Monday 5 October 2026.
During the session, participants will drive a dual-control car under the guidance of a qualified driving instructor. They will drive the same route twice: first using their usual driving style, and then a second time following the instructor’s advice. Participants will then be able to see exactly how much their fuel consumption changed during the guided drive.
– We want to give the people of Vaasa a fun and practical way to rethink their driving habits. At the same time, they can pick up useful tips from a professional on how to save both money and the environment when driving, says Johanna Punkari, Energy and Climate Specialist at the City of Vaasa.
Fuel consumption could be reduced by up to 30%
The event aims to inspire residents to explore ways of making their private car use more sustainable.
– Similar events held elsewhere have been very well received. Participants were able to reduce their fuel consumption by as much as 15% to 30%, delivering noticeable savings in a short time, says Punkari.
Registration in now open
The eco-driving session lasts 30–40 minutes and is open to drivers of both manual and automatic cars. Guidance is available in Finnish, Swedish, and English. The route passes through Vaasa city centre and nearby areas.
The event is open to anyone who holds a valid driving licence. Participants are asked to book a suitable time slot in advance using the online registration form (webropol.com).
Each participant is given an individual start time, so only one person takes part in the driving session at any one time. Time slots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
An easy way to save money
Vaasa, winner of the EU’s prestigious Green Leaf 2026 environmental award, wants to be carbon neutral by the end of the 2020s. Traffic is a major source of emissions, and adopting a more economical driving style is one way to reduce the environmental impact of road transport.
According to Punkari, even small changes can make a big difference.
– You don’t always need to make big changes, and sometimes it isn’t even possible. However, everyone can make small changes in their daily lives that help save both money and the environment. That is exactly what Vaasa’s Green Leaf year is all about – learning together how we can do things even better.
