Street lights switched off again for the summer

Published: 15.6.2026

Street lighting will be switched off in Vaasa from 1 June to 31 July. Only the city centre will remain lit during the summer months.

The lights may occasionally be on during weekdays even in summer due to maintenance work, and sporadically during weekends to help remove moisture from lamps and cables.

Street lights switched off to save money and protect the environment

The summer switch-off is also part of Vaasa’s Green Leaf 2026 year, highlighting the city’s commitment to environmental action. Switching off the street lights reduces energy consumption by an amount equivalent to the annual electricity use of around 60 detached houses. It also helps save money and reduce CO₂ emissions.

Moreover, switching off the street lights reduces disturbance to insects, pollinators, and other species, helping to prevent biodiversity loss. It also reduces light pollution and creates a more natural environment.

Vaasa has been named a European Green Leaf City for 2026. The European Commission awards this recognition annually to cities that promote sustainable development and work systematically for the environment and climate.
