Temporary traffic arrangements around Onkilahti Comprehensive School from 1 June

Published: 1.6.2026

The City of Vaasa will improve traffic safety in the area surrounding Onkilahti Comprehensive School during summer 2026. The improvements will cover several junctions and a section of Myllykatu, with work starting in early June. The junctions are expected to be completed around the turn of July–August, and Myllykatu during August.

Work on the junctions will begin at the Kalastajankatu–Olympiakatu junction on Monday 1 June. Next, work will move on to the Vuorikatu–Olympiakatu junction.

Speed limits will be reduced near the worksites. At times, only one lane or part of the junction may be in use. The junction of Vuorikatu and Olympiakatu may be temporarily closed to all traffic. In that case, traffic will be diverted along a clearly signposted route.

The works will be carried out on weekdays during normal working hours, but some individual phases may also need to be done at other times. The works may cause occasional noise.

New pedestrian and cycle path on Myllykatu

The renovation of Myllykatu between Vuorikatu and Laivakatu will also begin in early June. A new shared‑use pedestrian and cycle path will be built along this street section, aimed at strengthening the existing network of walking and cycling routes. A raised pedestrian crossing designed to improve road safety will be built at the junction of Myllykatu and Laivakatu.

In addition, 14 new on‑street parking spaces will be created and new trees planted.

Access to properties will be maintained

Every effort will be made to maintain access to properties throughout the works. At times access may be possible only on foot. However, the worksites are not located directly outside property access roads.
