This summer’s road resurfacing work has begun in Vaasa

Published: 26.5.2026

Vaasa’s streets will be resurfaced over the summer to improve road safety and make winter maintenance easier. The city urges residents to stay alert and take extra care around worksites. In the city centre’s busiest areas, work is carried out at night.

This summer, resurfacing work in Vaasa is focusing on the main roads most heavily worn by traffic – the so-called bus routes. Some of the most extensive resurfacing will be carried out on Vaasanpuistikko, Yrittäjänkatu, Lumivaarantie and Onkilahdenkatu, among others.

For pedestrian and cycle paths, the city’s Traffic Areas team prioritises locations that can be resurfaced without major groundwork. More detailed planning of the specific sites is still under way.

Methods are being examined

The resurfacing work will be carried out in phases. First, the old asphalt is milled off, after which the street is resurfaced. In Vaasa, milling began last week, and resurfacing will begin at the first sites this week.

The global situation and rising material costs are affecting both the methods and scope of the asphalting work.

– We are spending the same amount on resurfacing as in 2025, but we have to think carefully about how the work is delivered so that we can resurface as many streets and cycle paths as possible, says Isak Norrgård, Maintenance Supervisor for the City of Vaasa.

The City of Vaasa’s contractor for resurfacing and milling work in 2026 is Peab Industri Oy. In addition to Public Utility Services, other operators are also working on the streets, including GRK, Vaasa Water, Vaasan Sähkö, and companies responsible for laying telecommunications cables.

An appropriate speed and anticipation improve safety

Resurfacing sites are scheduled and planned to minimise disruption to traffic. For safety reasons, it is essential that work at the city centre’s busiest sites is carried out at night.

The city reminds all road users to pay close attention to roadworks signage and traffic controllers. An appropriate speed and good anticipation improve the safety of both road users and those working on the street.
