Vaasa City Orchestra visits Korsholm Music Festival and the Crusell Week

The Korsholm Music Festival’s opening concert, “From the New World,” on Thursday July 23 at 19 at Korsholm Church will be conducted by Johannes Gustavsson. The concert takes its name from its closing piece, Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” Dvořák composed this iconic symphony while he was in the United States in the 1890s. The other works on the program are Nicky Sohn’s “Tales of the Bunny and the Tiger” and Vladimir Agopov’s Double Concerto for Cello and Violin, featuring violinist Anna-Liisa Bezrodny and the Korsholm Music Festival’s artistic director, cellist Jan-Erik Gustafsson, as soloists.

Only a week later, on Thursday July 30, the Vaasa City Orchestra will perform at the New Church in Uusikaupunki as part of Crusell Week. The grand gala concert will be conducted by Teemu Hämäläinen, who also arranged the orchestral accompaniments for Bernhard Crusell’s rarely heard solo songs. The songs will be performed by soprano Helena Juntunen, one of Finland’s most successful international soloists. The program will also feature gems of French orchestral music and W. A. Mozart’s Symphony no. 31 “Paris”.
