What positive actions for the environment would you take with €50,000?

Published: 14.1.2026

We are once again looking for a project for participatory budgeting. In honour of Green Leaf year, ideas should promote sustainability and protecting the environment as well as the wellbeing of Vaasa residents. Residents are invited to share their ideas until 8 February.

Participatory budgeting is a way of engaging residents in discussions, planning, and decision-making regarding the use of public tax funds.

First, residents suggest ideas, and then they vote for the winner. The winning idea will be announced on 10 April and implemented during 2026.

Aiming to boost a sense of community and a good environment for all

Vaasa is a European Green Leaf City for 2026, and in honour of the Green Leaf year, part of the €50,000 participatory budgeting sum will be funded by the prize money awarded for the title.

– In celebration of the Green Leaf year, we invite Vaasa residents to suggest ideas that support green values such as biodiversity, energy efficiency, and the circular economy. The initiative also aims to encourage communality and inspire people of all ages in Vaasa to make our city greener and more enjoyable, says Suvi Aho, Strategy Manager.

All ideas are collected and implemented regularly, even outside the participatory budgeting process, says Helena Alanen, District Coordinator.
