EnergySampo Future Energy System

Future Energy System builds system-level capability for the energy system in the Vaasa region and takes the cooperation of the EnergySampo ecosystem to its next stage.
The green transition is a systemic change. The interplay of generation, transmission, storage and consumption can no longer be assessed at the level of individual technologies; what is needed is the ability to model the energy system as a whole and to test alternative development paths before investment decisions are made. No single company in the region will build such a capability alone, nor will it emerge from a single research project: it requires joint work between companies and research, and neutral orchestration.

The project is implemented as a group project in which Oy Merinova Ab is responsible for ecosystem orchestration and the University of Vaasa for the research and modelling work. The work is divided into five work packages: project management, EnergySampo cooperation, research cooperation, national and international cooperation, and communications and dissemination.

During the project period five flagship programmes form the spine of the pilot portfolio: High Power Lab (scalable research infrastructure), simulation and the regional Regulatory Sandbox, hydrogen (BotH2nia Hydrogen Valley), GigaVaasa (datacenter collaboration) and Future of Energy (sector coupling). The region’s connection to European networks is strengthened through the Energy Transition Valley initiative led by the University of Vaasa.

As a result, the region will have a defined and demonstrated system-level simulation capability, new research and pilot projects prepared on that basis, and clearer, measurable objectives for ecosystem cooperation. The target group consists of the energy technology companies of the EnergyVaasa cluster, the region’s higher education institutions and research organisations, and through them the wider economy of the Vaasa city region.
