FRE 8.12.2023 at 19.00 VAASA CITY HALL
Vaasa and Seinäjoki City Orchestras
dir. Jascha von der Goltz
sol. Ossi Tanner, piano

  • Jean Sibelius: Karelia Suite, Op. 11, ’15
  • Ann-Elise Hannikainen: Piano Concerto, ’20
  • Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 6 in D minor, Op. 104, ’28

The programme for the Day of Finnish Music will naturally feature Finnish works, but this time with a slight international twist. Ann-Elise Hannikainen’s rarely heard piano concerto, a long-time expatriate, is full of the electrifying rhythms and lush melodies of the Iberian Peninsula. Otherwise, the concert features the music of Jean Sibelius: the Kalevala-romantic Karelia Suite takes us to mythical Karelia, and after the interval, we hear the first-snow-scented Sixth Symphony, exactly 100 years old now, by our national composer.

Pianist Ossi Tanner is a lyrical virtuoso of the younger generation, and the talent and skills of German conductor Jascha van der Goltz led him to first prize at the last Jorma Panula Conducting Competition.
