Édith Piaf, the Little Sparrow, interpreted French chansons in a way that spoke of a tumultuous life lived with heartbreak. Frenchwoman Valérie Gabail is today’s brilliant chanteuse, whose lyrical soprano lends herself to a wide range of music from baroque to cabaret. With conductor Nick Davies’ mastery of the subtleties of French popular music and Timo Hietala’s crème de la crème arrangements, the concert is like a journey to the Parisian music salons of Montparnasse and the golden years of chanson.
