Harstad harbour and city centre.

Harstad

In 1949, Vaasa was the second city that Harstad established a broad-based, long-term partnership with – a relationship between two communities in two countries. While once a bilateral social agreement for promoting cultural and commercial ties, Harstad nowadays looks to Vaasa for ideas and inspiration for further developing the Harstad community.

Harstad is the second-most populated municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway, with nearly 25,000 inhabitants. Harstad is the most populous town in Central Hålogaland, and the third largest in all of Northern Norway.

Strategically located in the middle of Northern Norway, and easily accessible from Tromsø, Lofoten, and Narvik, Harstad offers a perfect base for Arctic adventures. The city center of Harstad has the ocean on one side and lush, green hilltops on the other. The city offers urban experiences such as theatre and concerts, nice restaurants and cafés, and a wide range of small specialist shops. Around Harstad you will find an exciting region. The islands of Grytøy, Sandsøy, and Bjarkøy are only a short ferry ride away. With its rich wildlife, stunning scenery, and exciting Viking history, everybody can find something of interest. The neighbouring county Kvæfjord will amaze you, and you will never be able to forget the taste of the local strawberries and the Norwegian national cake, Kvæfjordkake.

Today the city is also the natural home for the northern headquarters of energy companies like Equinor, Aker PB and Lundin. Together with Harstad’s strong ties to the ocean, comes a mature and thriving maritime industry.
