Umeå

Umeå is the capital of Västerbotten county, the fastest growing and most populous municipality in northern Sweden, and a major logistical centre. Umeå Airport, a few kilometres from the centre, is one of the busiest in Sweden. You can also get to Umeå on E4, E12, or via the Botnia railway, or of course by sea you can cross the Quarken strait on the world’s most environmentally friendly ferry from Vaasa.

Umeå is a growing city. Umeå University was inaugurated in 1965 and since then Umeå’s population has doubled. Today, immigrants make up 54 per cent of the population. The people of Umeå are young compared to the population of the rest of Sweden. The City has a population of 133,010 with an average age of 39 years.

The business community in Umeå is interesting. There are many growing companies, particularly in biotechnology, medicine, information technology, environment, and energy.

In Umeå – the City of knowledge, Umeå University, offers a wide variety of programmes in all areas for its 37,000 students. In Umeå can also the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences be found. Umeå is a strong sports city with a wide range of sports clubs and a successful elite sport. Umeå has won Sweden’s best sports city in both 2018 and 2020.

Outdoor life in Umeå is characterised by its proximity to the sea, coast, forests, and rivers, and by the changing seasons with heavy snowy winters and sunny bathing summers.

In multicultural Umeå there is much to see and do. Visit the Norrland Opera with its symphony orchestra, attend one of the many festivals or discover the internationally renowned Bildmuseet. In 2014, Umeå was the European Capital of Culture.

Umeå is Vaasa’s closest city and can be reached in 3,5 hours by ferry. The ferry – called Aurora Botnia – and the harbours in Umeå and Vaasa are  jointly owned by both cities. The ties between Vaasa and Umeå have been very close for a long time. In August 2023,  a joint development strategy for Umeå and Vaasa was approved . The unique strategy is now being implemented, leading to an even closer cooperation between the two cities.
