Allotment holder: tips for keeping your plot neat and tidy!
Published: 29.5.2026
The City of Vaasa has four allotment gardens where residents can grow edible crops and ornamental plants. This summer, the city will carry out regular inspections to ensure the allotments are kept tidy, safe, and pleasant for everyone. The city will provide free skips to help with this.
A well-kept allotment is tidy and only used for growing plants. Any items used on the plot, such as tables, benches and tools, should be stored in the toolbox when you are not on the plot. Litter and plant waste should be taken to the designated disposal areas.
Building fences, walkways, or other structures – such as raised bed frames – is not allowed. Rainwater barrels, barbecues, compost bins, or other unnecessary items are also not allowed on the allotments.

Skips to help keep allotments neat and tidy
Following the rules is important, as litter and the shelter provided by unnecessary structures can encourage the spread of harmful invasive species and rats.
– The most common breaches involve added structures and items left on plots. For example, we typically see fences, built walkways, greenhouse structures, and rainwater barrels. There is also room for improvement when it comes to litter, and we kindly ask people not to walk their dogs on the allotments, says Kaj-Erik Grandell, Head Gardener for the City of Vaasa.
To help keep the allotments tidy, the city has provided free skips at each allotment area this summer. The skips will be removed during Midsummer week. The skips can be used for all types of waste, including wood and plastic.
– Most allotments are already very well cared for, and we would like to thank the plot holders for taking such good care of our shared areas. We encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with the rules and wish everyone a great growing season, Grandell says.
Issues will be addressed when necessary
If the inspections reveal structures or activities that breach the rules, the plot holder will be asked to put things right.
Failure to comply with the notice may result in the termination of the right to rent the allotment.
