Lots of free events at the library throughout the spring

Published: 14.2.2024

The Vaasa Main Library is hosting several free visits, lectures, and events by authors and poets this spring.

On 15 February at 18–19, the Estonian poet Elo Viiding, who is one of the most important figures in contemporary poetry in Estonia, will perform in the Drama Hall of the Main Library. Viiding published his debut collection at the age of 16. To date, Viiding has published thirteen collections of poetry, the latest of which is Assisi Luulet (2021). Viiding will be interviewed by poet/publisher Tommi Parkko. The event is organised in cooperation with the Vaasa-Pärnu Seura, Suomen Viro-yhdistysten liitto ry, and Parko Publishers.

On Thursday 22 February at 18–19, there will be a lecture on the ABC of investing, which will cover the basics of investing and provide information for the beginner investor. The lecture will be given by Viljami Riuttala (chairman) and Joska Joenpolvi (vice-chairman), members of the Vaasan Arvopaperisijoittajat ry, an association for investors in securities. Both speakers are accounting and finance students at the University of Vaasa. Viljami has a background in the Stock Exchange Ambassador Programme of the Finnish Foundation for Share Promotion, and Joska also acts as Vice-Chair of the Warrantti Invest investment club. They share a strong interest in the financial markets.

On Monday 11 March at 17.30–18.30, the visiting author at the Drama Hall will be Kaisu Tuokko, whose debut novel Kosto is set in the author’s youth in Kristiinankaupunki. The crime, which takes place in an idyllic small town, provides a powerful contrast. In addition, the other main character in the detective story has an interesting connection with Vaasa.

On Tuesday 2 April at 17.30 in the Drama Hall, there will be an evening focusing on investing in apartments with the Kvarkens Konsumenter rf. This member association of the Consumers’ Union defends the interests and rights of consumers and users of public services in the Ostrobothnia region.

On Tuesday 9 April, there will be ‘Pönttötalkoot’ – building bird houses as a joint volunteer activity – with the environmental society Vaasan ympäristöseura. An event for the whole family, both children and adults are welcome to the Drama Hall to learn about how to build birdhouses for small birds, and to put that knowledge into practice right away.

National Veterans’ Day and Veterans Week are celebrated annually. The 2024 National Veterans’ Day celebrations will be held on Saturday 27 April in Vaasa. The event on Tuesday 23 April in the Drama Hall of the Main Library from 18–19 will be part of the Veterans’ Week programme. Marko Tikka, researcher in history and docent in Finnish history, will give a lecture on ”Laitonta, moraalitonta ja lihottavaa: Suhtautuminen paritansseihin ja sota-ajan tanssikielto Suomessa”.
