The planning phase for City Centre Comprehensive School is under way

A new school complex, intended for Finnish-language basic education Years 1–9, will be built in Vaasa city centre in the next few years. The planning phase for the new Comprehensive School began in January.

Planning began in January with a site visit and the first planning meeting. The planning phase is expected to continue until the end of 2026.

The following designers have been appointed for City Centre Comprehensive School:

  • Main and architectural design (including yard and interior design, acoustics, and kitchen equipment planning): Arcadia Oy Arkkitehtitoimisto
  • Structural design (including foundation and fire safety design): Sweco Finland Oy
  • Building services design (including heating, water supply and drainage, ventilation, building automation, electrical systems, audio systems, cooling, and refrigeration, as well as lifecycle planning and circular economy expertise): Rejlers Rakentaminen Oy

School staff, students, and parents will be consulted as the planning progresses.

The new comprehensive school will consist of three buildings

The City Centre Comprehensive School will consist of three buildings:

  • The historic building at Kauppapuistikko 22, which is set to be renovated;
  • A new building to be constructed on the site of the old building at Raastuvankatu 33, which is to be demolished;
  • Keskuskoulu Primary School, which was renovated in 2020. The building will be used in its present condition.

Once finished, the new premises will accommodate all of Merenkurkku Secondary School, as well as the bilingual and English-language classes of Suvilahti School. After the move, the Merenkurkku school building will no longer be used for educational purposes.
